If you’re starting a record label or your band is considering self-releasing your own material, and you’re in the Merseyside area, this seminar could be just what you need. The music business is a complicated one, and you need to be prepared. This session will help you understand the structure of the music industry, copyright, recording contracts, collection societies and more.

This seminar isn’t about discussing the future of the music industry or finding the ‘next big thing’. It’s about learning practical skills and knowledge to give you the best chance of success. Although focussing on the needs of new labels and DIY musicians, it will be useful to artist managers and anyone who would like an insight into the recording industry. The session will take place in Studio 2,
part of the famous Parr Street Studios, Liverpool.

What the seminar will cover:

The structure of the music industry – What do record companies, publishers and managers actually do?
Contracts – Recording contracts, 360 deals, licensing deals, band agreements, publishing contracts, key clauses to look out for
Collection societies – The role of PPL, PRS for Music, MCPS, and why you need ISRCs
Releasing a record – CD replication, physical and digital distribution, promo videos, promotional strategies, ensuring chart eligibility
Managing your team – Working with photographers, designers, session musicians and other freelancers

£10 per person (£8 for students and people on benefits)

About the presenter: Rob Eakins is a director of Cavern Records and Ultimate Fake Records, and an accredited business adviser. Rob was recently invited to present guest lectures on starting a business in the creative industries to classes at the University of Liverpool and the University of Chester. He has been supporting new businesses in Merseyside since 2004.

One-day recording and promo package now available

We’ve created a special one-day package with new, ambitious bands from the Liverpool area in mind. In conjunction with record producer Russell Cottier and Catalyst Studios in St Helens, the day starts with five hours of recording, followed by a photo shoot, a session on surviving in the music industry, and your tracks mixed before you leave the studio. Bands will also get a professionally designed logo AND their lead track set to a video filmed during the day. All the things a band needs to get taken seriously. The first available date is Thursday 10^th May.

The day will run as follows:

10 am – Recording session with producer Russell Cottier (www.russellcottier.com). Bands will have the chance to discuss plans for the session with Russell in advance. Part of this session will also be filmed for use in the video.

3 pm – Photo shoot with Liverpool-based photographer Grethe Borsum (www.gretavisions.co.uk). Bands will be able to pick two images from the session which will be professionally edited and emailed to them within 72 hours.

4 pm – Info session from Rob Eakins (Director of Ultimate Fake Records and Cavern Records) on surviving in the music industry. Topics will include getting your music on iTunes and strategies for promoting your band. Bands will be able to send their questions to Rob before the session.

5 pm – Review the mixes with Russell, and get a copy to take home.

6 pm – End.

Bands will then be contacted by Marc at Thirds Design to discuss their logo (www.thirdsdesign.org). We aim to have your logo and promo video completed and delivered to you within 7 working days after filming.

Total cost: £615

Venue: Catalyst Studios, Charles Street, St Helens.

The Science of the Lamps

The Science of the Lamps are an exciting trio newly signed to Ultimate Fake. Consisting of two Norwegian singer/songwriters and a button-tweaking wizard, they combine close harmonies, some children’s instruments and playful thoughtfulness to create audio-visual expressions of emotion and experience. The Science of the Lamps release double A-side single

On the 10th February 2012 the Science of the Lamps released their first double A-side single on Ultimate Fake Records. The single features the tracks ’27 Club Reject’ and ‘Mr Agony’ and was officially launched when the band appeared at Liverpool’s Threshold Festival 2012 last night. There will be two videos released to support the single, the first of which can be seen by clicking here. The single can be purchased from iTunes by following this link. We’re expecting great things from this hard-working and slightly quirky band.

Music Industry workshops coming soon

We’ll soon be running workshops in the Liverpool and wider Merseyside area for people who want to learn more about starting their own record label. These workshops will be presented by an accredited business adviser experienced in the music industry, and will cover the essential information you need, including what to look out for in a contract, income streams, copyright issues and collection societies. Francis McEntegart on Radio Merseyside

Our good friend Francis McEntegart from music industry specialists McEntegart Legal was featured on Radio Merseyside this evening. Interviewed by Dave Monks, Francis discussed some of the most important legal considerations when forming a band and deciding on band names. He also gave tips on handling your manager and protecting the copyright in your songs. He’ll be appearing again on the 24th July, so tune in to learn more about music industry law.

Ultimate Fake represented on the MIBI Panel

Our very own Rob Eakins was invited to sit on the panel for the final part of the Make It Break It Awards’ (MIBI) four day Industry Academy 2010, which was held at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA). Joined by music industry experts including Mike Walsh from Xfm and legendary producer Steve Levine, the panel answered questions posed by the competition winners on topics such as the role of managers and whether bands really need a major record deal in order to be successful. Some of the advice given by the panel will be discussed on our Business Talk page very soon. And what did the panel all agree was the most essential element for success in the music industry? Hard work of course!

The Managing Director of Ultimate Fake Records, Rob Eakins, has been asked to contribute to a brand new website, launching on Sunday 10th October 2010.
